Today, on a lovely walk with Bethany (at a much brisker pace than I had anticipated - very invigorating), I realized that I have warring factions in my psyche. We passed some goats, and I expressed my attraction for the farmer's life. So simple, so basic, so wholesome. And so hard.
Disillusioned with this "hard" aspect, I moved on to a soliloquy about being a high-powered business woman with high heels and a briefcase and a high-class cup of coffee.
This reminded me of the time I was sitting in Dr. Barbour's American Lit class and he was talking about Hawthorne's idea that the best man could expect was "troubled joy." I agreed wholeheartedly. And then I remembered how I am one of those I-love-life, optimistic people.
Apparently I have a little more time to spend in the formative years.
